Yummy and Easy October 6, 2008 I got this breadmaker -- my first -- from my local FreeCycle group. I'm very happy with it, though I have made mistakes. In my first loaf, I hand mixed the ingredients and then realized I still had to add the yeast -- a crucial mistake that would have caused a huge mess, I'm told. I started over from scratch. For that round, I added too little water because I didn't realize that 1 and 5/8 cups was more than 1 1/2 cups. (Stupid fractions. Why not just say 13 ounces of water, Oster? That's a measuring cup I actually have.) The bread came out with the consistency of sand. So with my third try, I got it right with a little help from the Hill Billy Housewife's blog. Now I have this great loaf, and I'm ready to bake another loaf before I hit the hay tonight. (On the third loaf, I also tried the delay setting (adding 20 minutes) and found it worked just fine, and so I'll keep experimenting with that.) Since I got mine free, I couldn't complain about the missing manual. I found it online, and that was a huge plus. (Thanks Oster! That kind of makes up for my public school education.)
buena maquina!!! October 1, 2008 es muy facil de usar y sale bien con las recetas que trae incluidas, pero no trajo ningun medidor de materiales. otras si la traen, pero para el precio esta bien.. la uso 4 veces por semana y hay dia que hago dos pan. buen producto
good machine!!!
Great Breadmaker! It's better than my old White Westinghouse September 30, 2008 I had an seven year old White Westinghouse bread machine that eventually broke. We went out an purchase the Oster 5838 because it was a horizontal bread machine. We had a vertical and I wanted to try something different this time. This machine has worked well. So far I've only baked 2 loaves of regular white bread. Both came out better than my old bread machine loaves! The bread was wonderful. We really like this one. I would recommend this one to anyone who wants to bake their own bread. I liked it so much I took a few pictures to show the product and the bread! Enjoy!
I agree with others, collapsed EVERY time September 28, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have tried different recipes and fresh ingredients and I have yet to produce any loaf that hasn't fallen. I suspect it has something to do with the heating element since the loaf rises and looks great right up to the baking point. I have had different breadmakers in the past that have worked great. Not this one. I will be looking for a replacement.
Can't ask for more September 15, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have never used a BM before and to date, I have tried several different recipes from the book provided and from Betty Crocker's Best Bread Machine Cookbook, all came out just fine.
One "secret." I don't just leave the BM by itself after I put everything in it, chances are I might need an extra teaspoon of water or bread flour... I don't know about you, but unless I do it by weight in grams which is accurate, measuring cups and spoons is not exactly perfect; one day you may pack it more than the other. So, I stay there for a few minutes, spatula in hand with my extra spoon of water and flour just in case.
Don't attribute this shortcoming to the BM rather to the baker, me, if, indeed it is a shortcoming.
