Product Description The Typhoon Professional 6 Inch Skimmer is the perfect replacement for traditional bamboo spiders. Made of heavy gauge metal, with a rust-proof design, this skimmer feels sturdy in the hand for confidence in food retrieval. Clean with hot soapy water. Dry immediately. Not suitable for the dishwasher
Amazon.com Review Combining form, function, and style, Typhoon has created a unique line of cookware tools, kitchen gadgets, and dinnerware items that coordinate with a variety of home decors and occasions. Designed with a contemporary flair, many of the housewares products blend a sophisticated sensibility with a retro edginess. This large wire skimmer, with a wide mesh scoop head measures 17 inches long and is ideal for shallow or deep frying of shrimp, tempura, or french fries. Crafted from durable steel, with a nickel plate finish, the skimmer tolerates high temperatures while the long handle ensures that hands are safely away from the hot oil used for frying. The mesh head enables the excess oil to drain away so that food is not overly greasy. Typhoon recommends washing the skimmer by hand. --Lea Werbel

Useful, but of very poor quality September 1, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The quality of this spider strainer is unacceptable. After using it twice, and hand washing with soap and a sponge, I noticed it has rusted on the handle and all over the mesh. I had only used it to pick up ravioli and blanched vegetables; I can only imagine how it would look like if it'd been dipped in hot oil for frying. At any rate, I sent it back to get a refund and I'm awaiting a response.
Chrome Plated? August 26, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was disappointed that I didn't notice thsi was only CHROME PLATED. Not very practical for a busy kitchen. You have to wash and dry it immediately after use to prevent it from RUSTING. Very unsafe to be using on food. Why can't they just make this out of stainless or even aluminum? I use mine, but only rarely.
Great design August 9, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
After being frustrated with all the bamboo handled "spiders" that came with woks, I was happy to find that America's Test Kitchen and Alton brown recommended this beauty.
What a difference it makes! Large surface area and no handle obstruction. I can actually get most of my food out of a pot in one swipe. The long handle makes it easy to use, even in my turkey fryer pot.
Yep, it's the best May 29, 2008 This is a superior kitchen utensil - extremely well-made, comfortable and safe for large or small deep fryers (note the long handle length in the product description.)
I've also used it to remove poached fish and eggs from their baths, and to separate and drain fruit salads from the liquid that pools in the bottom of the bowl. Based on other reviews, I'll always hand wash it, because I want to keep this great tool around for a long time.
Typhoon Professional Cook's Wire Skimmer is a keeper April 19, 2008 I have been looking for a resonably priced skimmer for some time. Since this one was about half the price or less than most that I looked at I thought that I would get it. It is a nice size and weight. It is not flimsy. It should last for years. My only problem with the skimmer is that it is not stainless so I don't have to worry about it rusting; still it is well worth the price.
