RTFM - works as advertised! November 15, 2008 I purchased this coffee maker from the Amazon Marketplace for around $75. I read all of the bad reviews, but took a chance. I am very happy with this machine. It works exactly as advertised, as long as you read the manual. It is not just "plug and play" for lack of a better term.
It does not leak or make messes like others have stated. The carafe keeps coffee hot for at least an hour after brewing (probably more, but I haven't tried it) and the "small-brew" settings work very well. So far, mine has kept time perfectly, which is another of the common complaints in the reviews. I guess people are either dumb, or got defective units.
The only con (and this is totally subjective) is the aesthetics. It's not my favorite looking machine, but I knew that when I bought it so it's not right to complain. At over $100 less than the mt500, it is a steal.
The directions are a must read! October 23, 2008 Capresso 490.05 ST600 Stainless Thermal Coffeemaker
I purchased this coffee maker over a month ago, and thought I should offer a review, especially in light of the range of feedback. If you read the instructions, this machine works fine, but you MUST read the instructions. I know many people do not want to bother, but it is needed.
Pros - TEMPERATURE/CARAFE: Coffee is hot, and the carafe keeps it that way for hours. But like any thermal devise, it needs to be prepped (after all if you pour hot coffee/water/soup into a cold thermos, it will not stay hot for long). Just put hot water into the carafe and dump it out before brewing. This does not help anyone who likes to use the timer, however.
COFFEE: As a previous review has stated, I find that I use less coffee as well. I grind my coffee fresh before brewing, and have the grinder set to `4 cups'. This is fine for me for a whole pot of coffee (10 cups), but I am not a fan a very strong coffee. My husband does like 'robust' coffee, and the `6 cup' setting on the grinder made a great full pot of coffee for him.
TIMING: I found that a full brewing cycle takes 11/12 minutes. Some have noted that this is a long time, but I think it is very reasonable, especially in light of how hot the coffee is.
SERVING OPTIONS: I found I really like that they provide a cycle for 4-6 cups of coffee. Once I have shared the initial pot of coffee with hubby, I find I still need a half pot more for the rest of the morning. Great feature.
Cons - GROUNDS: If the coffee is ground too fine, grinds get into the bottom of the carafe, but then again, the instructions mention not to use fine grounds. The only problem is how one defines `fine'. I also have an espresso/cappuccino machine, and the grounds I used in the Capresso were not that fine. However, I made the grounds coarser, and that corrected the problem.
CLEANING: While the carafe itself and the machine are easy enough to clean, I find it a bit odd that cover of the carafe is not. The directions note that it is not to be cleaned under running water, but wiped clean with a cloth. This makes some sense, since it is a 'brew into spout' machine, and coffee never gets onto the top of the cover. They also note that the carafe is not to be turned upside down when the carafe is full (like you would a thermos to make sure it is sealed). What I do is wipe the out side of the cover clean, and when I am rinsing the carafe, I put more water into it, put the cover on, and pour out the water like I would coffee.
Overview -
Overall, I am very happy with the Capresso. Great machine for a good price (I paid $70.00, including S&H). While the shape is a bit awkward, it is not a large as other make it out to be. I compared it to my last carafe coffee maker and found that while it is slightly wider, it is not as deep, especially without the carafe. Since this is a 'brew into spout' design, only the core of the machine takes up counter space once the carafe is removed. In the end, I find I have a bit more counter space.
Cleaning the carafe (specifically the cover) can be awkward, but is a small inconvenience. As for the drip other reviews have mentioned, I find that it does do this at times, but just wipe down the machine after you are done using it, and there is no problem. As for the carafe moving away from the machine in the middle of brewing, just make sure the counter is dry. I have not had the experience of getting hot coffee all over the counter, and am not too sure how it is possible, since when the carafe moves away from the machine, the machine turns off. This may happen if (1) that the gold filter was not cleaned of the oils given off by the coffee, (2) the coffee was too fine, or (3) a paper filter was used inside the gold filter. All of these things are addressed in the directions. I can see how other reviewers have had problems with the machine, but like I mentioned at the top of this review, you need to read the directions.
Now what really matters - The coffee is hot, and most importantly, tastes great! Of course, the coffee beans play a large part in how the coffee tastes, but if you have good beans, you will have great coffee! I have to now to make my half pot of coffee. I think I will opt for French Vanilla...
Absolute HEAVEN! October 12, 2008 I just bought this coffee maker and couldn't be happier. GREAT quality, best brewed coffee EVER, and looks fantastic in my kitchen. Yes, you must read the directions, but once you get it your off and flying into java bliss!
Capresso ST600 October 8, 2008 Don't waste your hard earned money on this particular coffee maker. I have had mine less than one year and I am here shopping for another because the ST600 just stopped working. I echo all the reviews regarding the poor quality of this machine. It is constantly drippy, the lid randomly pops open, and because of all the water, the pot will move away from the main brewer. It is hard to know how much water is in the machine and it is grossly oversized. I have had other capresso's and will be returning to the other model I have purchased before.
For the price, cant be beat! October 1, 2008 I have read the negative reviews, but went ahead and purchased one of these on e-bay new for 55$. Best money I ever spent. Yes, I had a drip problem the 1st time, but its because I DIDNT READ THE DIRECTIONS, and tried to pull the pot back before the red brewing light went out. I suspect some of the other posters did the same thing.
This is one of the few coffee makers to brew at the ideal brewing temperature, and all the others will be over $150.00. Well worth it for the money.
