first one missing sealing ring, second one falling apart November 19, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First one came with missing sealing ring in the plastic collar. I returned that and still hoping to get a functional piece ordered a second one. That came in even worse shape, the sealing ring was there this time but the plastic collar was not attached at all because all four screws were simply missing !! I am returning the second one too. It is outrageous that someone is trying to sell these not functional not fully assembled things.
First use observations November 18, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Two things. First, the machine vibrated so much on my kitchen counter that I had to hold the coffee cup in place in order to catch the drip. Second, it takes a really long time to heat-up/steam the milk.
Great Espresso; Skip the Steamer November 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is our first espresso maker. We found an easy way to clean the filter that works well. After using, rinse the filter and put it back into the machine; run the hot water through it. This self-cleans any clogs. It took us a while to figure out how to make our espresso taste like Tully's or Starbuck's. One of the Barista's suggested experimenting until we got the taste we like, and not just following the directions. I use a heaping scoop, and let the machine run a little longer than "one shot." I also save effort by just heating an inch or so of milk in the microwave, and skipping the steamer.
Great Machine November 7, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Doing research on this machine prior to purchasing, I noted a wide range of user responses, from "hated it" to "loved it" and everything in between. The positive reviews outweighed the negative, so I went for it. After all $90 (Woot.com) for a $250 machine seemed like a great deal. I have to say that I now believe those negative reviews are from truly defective machines or truly inept people. This thing works great! It's very hard to find a truly European tasting cappuccino in the US. We've only had it at fine dining restaraunts and we can't go there every morning. This machine delivers. Great esspresso and good crema. You will need to experiment with the brand of esspresso you use as they all taste different. I'd also reccomend cleaning the machine immediately after each use to maintain good flow. It's so easy, I clean it before enjoying my coffee. My last reccomendation would be to let the machine warm up at least 30 minutes prior to making your coffee and allowing the steam wand to pour into an empty cup before steaming your milk. It takes a short while to get to full steam. Four stars instead of five because I'd like the steam wand to be a bit longer.
Not So Good Machine November 2, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Breville needs to do some design work on this unit. It does produce excellent thick crema shots but the double walled filter clogs easily and is a pain to try to boil clean. The krups unit I had for 10 years prior to buying this machine worked flawlessly. I have had to unclog the double walled filter at least 5 times in under a years time already. The other thing is that the machine is noisy and vibrates so much that you have to hold the metal expresso cups in place or the vibration causes them to slide around on the all metal drip tray. Casues a big mess if you know what I mean. As for the frothing wand, in my opinion it does not do a very goods job of producing a strong steam flow. The frothing process takes forever. I would not recommend this product to another buyer. There are just to many other machines available.
