Amazon.com Review
Moderately priced and sturdily made, the heavy knives in this 10-piece set are forged from high-carbon stainless steel. They have thick bolsters for balance and safety and full tangs for strength and stability. The classic three-rivet handles are formed from durable, nonporous Bakelite. The set consists of four kitchen knives: an 8-inch serrated bread knife for slicing crusty loaves; a 7-inch chef's knife for chopping and mincing; a 5-inch utility knife for cutting fruits, vegetables, and lunch meats; and a 3-1/2-inch paring knife for trimming and peeling. The rest of the set contains four 4-1/2-inch, straight-edge steak knives that neatly cut steaks, chops, and roasts into bite-size pieces; an 8-inch sharpening steel to keep the knives' edges in order; and a heavy laminated-wood block with 10 slots. Hand washing is recommended. All the knives carry a lifetime warranty against defects. --Fred Brack

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy from Amazon   December 23, 2005

I ordered this item Dec 15 and it will not be delivered until Feb 9. The information above is deceiving about when it will be shipped to you. Just giving you a warning so you don't have to go through as much of a hassle as I have.

2 out of 5 stars Ya! Rust spots when put in dishwasher.   January 22, 2005

I bought this to replace wooden handle Chicago Cutlery knives that were being ruined in the dishwasher. These don't have the quality metal that the old wooden handle Chicago Cutlery knives do since the wooden ones don't develop rust spots on the metal after a run through the dishwasher while these do. So they must be of poorer quality than the old ones I have had for years. I also bought the Wusthof Grand Prix set and there are much much better for just $20 more. I know, I know you're not supposed to put knives in the dishwasher but I need to kill the harmful bacteria and heat sterilize them after cutting raw chicken etc. don't I?

5 out of 5 stars Good Knives   November 30, 2002

I have this set and I like it quite a bit. I prefer the bakelite handle with rivets to any other design (wood changes over time, regular plastic doesnt feel nearly as nice, and I don't care for the look of stainless handles).

I did not have a problem with cracked handles. I assume they will stay that way (I don't see how they could crack through normal use, since the blade is a full hilt design).

All these knives are straight edge (except the bread knife) with forged blades (better than stamped blades).

All in all a good set for people who don't want to spend lots of money on knives (like me).

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed Twice Over   August 26, 2002

I purchased this Insignia set. Three weeks later the handles cracked. I decided it must have been a fluke and tried a second Insignia set. I washed the knives in the dishwasher prior to the initial use. Two of the handles cracked and on 6 of the knives the stamp "Chicago Cutlery" washed off, perhaps they weren't proud of their product. It does say in two places on the box that they are dishwasher safe. I did like how the knives cut and especially how they were weighted. I will not however purchase a third set of these knives, the quality seems to be lacking.

I feel that the Chicago Cutlery Insignia 10-Piece Knife Set with Block deserves a 5-Star rating. I feel they are made quiet well they are heavy, balanced and work quiet well for an beginning chef as my self.
