Kinda sorta works, but for a lot less money, you can do much better November 27, 2008 I've had one of these for over a year. I really wanted it to be something that works well, because sometimes using a steel is just not enough. I convinced myself that short of professional sharpening or learning how to use a wet stone, this was as good as it gets.
I was wrong. On a whim I bought a ceramic sharpening rod, a Lansky Sharp Stick, for $10 from Amazon (delivered). I got it, tried it, and I don't think that the M130 is going to get much use anymore. Holy Cow does that ceramic sharpener ever work! A couple of swipes on it and an occasional swipe on my sharpening steel is all I am ever going to need. You do need to be careful, because that little ceramic rod is very aggressive, but given due care it is a terrific sharpening tool. And this from the cheapest ceramic sharpener Amazon sells!
The Chef's Choice M130 is a better choice to give someone as a wedding gift (it sure is pretty), but if you just want to put a super-sharp edge on a knife, a ceramic rod is the way to go for less than 10% of the price of the M130.
The best knife sharpner November 16, 2008 I learned how to sharpen knives, sisors, shears, lawnmover blades... This is do in 30 seconds what would take me an hour. It's well worth the money if you like your knife sharp.
The BEST that my MONEY CAN GET! BYE BYE DULL KNIVES! November 12, 2008 My mom has bought it for 2 years. It makes knife-sharpening so easy that all our adult family members can do it. Now, she's very happy and proud of her knives. Before that, there were many times, she's very frustrated because she could not cut the meat. She had to keep buying new knives when the old ones get dull. The majority of them cost approximately $25 a piece or more.
To use it sucessfully, you have to read the manual carefully first. Then, it will take 5 to 7 minutes to make a knife very sharp.
However it does not work in 3 situations below.
1. It does not sharpen serrated knives good enough. I believe it's because the structure of that kind of knives. I've never heard of any other sharpeners that can do this.
2. If your knife is a cheap one, this machine won't work. For example, the knifes that cost about 5 dollars or less, this sharpener won't help. It's because of the cheap steel of the knife. It's meant to be thrown away after getting dull. No sharpener can fix it.
3. If your knife has been sharpened many times. How many times are many? It depends on the knives. For expensive ones, the steel is good and there is a large amount of it on the knife blade. For cheaper ones, the amount of real steel is little. After being sharpened many times, the real steel section is gone. What is left is the section with bad steel. This area can't be sharpened at all.
just not worth the cost October 28, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
this product just does not do what it was intended to do as well as the cost should make it do.
i am certainly not happy with the outcome.
Works as advertised October 15, 2008 I just received this as a gift. After reading the well-written instructions, I went to work sharpening my loved but neglected kitchen knives. Twenty minutes later all my knives were razor sharp. It was very easy to use and did an excellent job. I'm going to try to sharpen my pocketknives but I don't expect the small blades will work as well.
