Amazon.com Review
Yogurt is a great, guilt-free snack for both adults and kids. With this yogurt maker, it's easy to add favorite flavors--including exotic and sweet fruits, rich crunchy nuts, and natural sweeteners--to basic yogurt. Just follow the recipes, supplied by the manufacturer, and a nutritious snack, with very little fat and no preservatives (like most commercial brands), is not too far away. Making yogurt takes from 4 to 10 hours to process, depending on desired tartness of the batch. If you're looking for frozen yogurt, you do have to chill it for 2 hours in the freezer before consumption after it's made. The yogurt can be stored up to one week. --Teresa Simanton

4 out of 5 stars Salton yogurt maker-xmas gift   January 7, 2009
I purchased this for my daughter. She is really enjoying it. So far she has made two kinds of yogurt and the machine works easily. Clean-up is a breeze. I think if you want to make your own yogurt this is a great little machine.

1 out of 5 stars it does nothing extra.   January 3, 2009

I don't like to fail so may be that's why I am challenging myself to make yogurt. I thought this will do the magic, you have to do everything manually before you put the mixture in this machine, how on earth I am going to bring the milk to 100f? put your finger and count to 10 didn't work, how would I know the starter still working. all this machine does is keep it warm, it does not tell when it is ready, doesn't have a thermostat, the cover does not close well, the price is cheap but why buy that if you have to do all the guessing work and then just keep it warm which you can do naturally on a hot day or after you use your oven or with thick covering to the mix, I just think it is a stupid machine, does nothing....

5 out of 5 stars Easy to use, easy to clean, makes excellent yogurt   December 31, 2008

I don't know why I got rid of the last model of yogurt maker, we were remodeling the kitchen, and I thought I did not need the Salton Yogurt maker.

I was wrong.

I started making yogurt using a quart canning jar and the microwave convection oven as a heat source. I have a microwave convection oven which can be set at 100 degrees F. I used it to make the yogurt. Worked great except the microwave oven was tied up while the yogurt was being made. Also, the constant noise from the microwave convection oven drove me crazy.

It's so much quieter to use the Salton yogurt maker. It quietly sits on the counter keeping the yogurt mixture gently warmed and about 6 to 10 hours later you will have a quart of homemade, preservative free, yogurt. Yummy!

I use the enclosed recipe which calls for plain yogurt, dried milk, and fresh milk. You can use dried or evaporated milk too, if you choose.

What I do is make up a batch of Nido whole milk using the milk powder sold at Amazon. You also need to use plain yogurt with active cultures. Pick a brand of yogurt you like as the flavor of your homemade yogurt will closely resemble the plain yogurt purchased as the starter. Follow the recipe directions which include heating the milk, allowing it to cool, and then adding the yogurt starter. Place the container in the yogurt maker, place the lid on the yogurt, and about 6 to 8 hours later you have yogurt.

Very easy, very tasty.

You can later make yogurt cheese by using a small strainer or by purchasing a yogurt cheese maker sold at Amazon. Yogurt cheese is thick, rich and delicious. You can spice it up with garlic and herbs or make a sweet cheese. Your preference.

I am glad to have the Salton Yogurt maker back in action in my kitchen. It was missed.

1 out of 5 stars Broke After Only a Few Uses   December 30, 2008

This product worked wonderfully for the first 10 uses or so. Now it doesn't heat up at all.....

4 out of 5 stars Great! But don't like the plastic container.   December 30, 2008

I am really excited about this yogurt maker. The only drawback is that container inside where you put the yogurt is plastic (number 5) and with all the health implications coming out these days concerning plastic and endocrine disruptors leaching into your food, I would prefer that they use a glass container. I am actually experimenting with using a glass jar that I found fits inside. I hope it works!
