3 out of 5 stars Rival GC8151-WN compared to other ice cream makers   October 8, 2008

I use to make ice cream when I was a kid and when I had kids I did it again. Now I live on my own and have diabetes and I love ice cream. Previous reviews on the Rival GC8151-WN have said things like "it didn't freeze it all the way", "recipes are complicated" from experience I know this to be typical for ice cream makers and I have owned a few. The manufacturer wants their product to seem AWESOME so they give you the best recipes but there are easier ones out there, such as a six pack of Orange soda pop and a can of sweetened condensed milk. For me, I tried diet soda pop & fat free condensed milk and it made a good sherbert. The pit fall of this unit is if you want good ice cream you have to wait 12 hours while it freezes the canister all the way and even then it doesn't get it as cold as ice and salt, but it is easier. All ice cream makers require further freezing when finished for "best" results. If I do not turn my freezer to its coldest setting I get a drink, not an ice cream. For me it is the perfect size, experimenting with diabetic recipes is fun. If I were to offer you a bit of advice it would be "turn your freezer down as much as possible and if you don't have a GREAT freezer, forget this one" if I were to tell Rival any thing it would be "get it colder and offer a recipe book with easy stuff too"

5 out of 5 stars Great for the kids!   August 14, 2008

I received this ice cream maker from my sister as she is moving and doesn't have room to take it along. I read the instruction booklet and was off to a great start! I put the canister into the freezer for 24 hrs. Make sure your ingredients are cold - either pour them into the maker right away or pop them back into the fridge until you are ready. If you're not sure if they are cold enough, set them into a larger container with ice water and stir to really lower the temp quickly. Turn the machine on and then add the ingredients so that the paddle doesn't freeze to the canister. You will know very soon if you have done everything correctly - it should start freezing on the sides within a few minutes of starting. I haven't had to wait more than 20 min. to get a nice soft-serve consistency, even in my Texas kitchen which was at least 85 degrees last night with the oven and stove top going with dinner. What we won't eat right away, I put into an air-tight container and store in the freezer. I will put up with whatever racket this machine wants to make as long as I don't have to deal with rock salt and ice! :) Stay close by - you will hear the paddle start switching directions as the ice cream firms. You don't want it to burn out the motor.

My kids think this is a dream come true, and I love the fact that I know all the ingredients are fresh and preservative-free. We have fun picking out what sort of mixes we'll make next. There's also no better excuse for making a yummy cobbler or pie to enjoy along with a big dollop of ice cream.

I keep my canister in the freezer at all times, so I'm ready at a moment's notice to whip up a batch.

5 out of 5 stars Read The Instructions   August 10, 2008

I purchased the GC8151 to make Gelato. I have used it twice with great results. I read the reviews about how the top expands and you can't get the lid on. I believe this happens if the unit is not placed in the freezer upright as the first step on page 4 states The most important step in making frozen desserts is to make sure you Freezer Canister is properly frozen. For best results the Canister should be wrapped in a plastic bag and placed in the freezer UPRIGHT in the back of your freezer where the temperature is coldest. I went a step further since I have a chest freezer. I actually made the icecream inside of my freezer so I could make another batch when the first was finished. For the money I thought this was a great value.

4 out of 5 stars No problems here   August 1, 2008
I live 30 miles from the grocery store and ice cream melts on the trip so I bought this for my son's b-day party. The ice cream didn't set the first go-round, so I scraped it out into a bowl, covered it and put it in the freezer. It was more ice milk than ice cream but the kids loved it. Now, I chill the ingredients really well and freeze the beater as well. No problems at all. I love it and recommend it to friends.

I was so excited about making some ice cream

so i ran to Target and get this little machine, it's small, but i think it's ok, im just making it for myself anyway

it did not work! i can even make ice cream using plastic bags, but not with this machine that make LOUD NOISE!!!

and before it really froze, the motor would stop, i guess its too hot or something, i'm not sure
