1 out of 5 stars Ruins Food   November 30, 2008
I needed a larger slow cooker and decided to purchase this Rival model, which I now wholeheartedly regret. The temperature is EXTREMELY HOT on the low setting. The temperature is so hot on the low setting, it practically melts my plastic slow cooker bags to the outside of the unit. As of tonight, this slow cooker has ruined 3 roasts, which are tough as leather. Save your money and do not purchase this item.

1 out of 5 stars Worthless   November 23, 2008
I just came back three hours after putting a Moroccan chicken stew recipe in at the "low" setting to find the stew boiling and the chicken a mush. I'll add my voice to the chorus -- this cooks so high at the lowest setting that it's pretty much worthless as a crock pot.

5 out of 5 stars Fill it up! Cooking for Larger Quantity Yields (6 qts)   November 23, 2008
Fill it up!

This slower cooker works perfectly. I just wish Rival made the exact same model in a 3 qrt version for deserts.

***Cooking for Larger Quantity Yields***

Most recipes are recommended for 3 to 4 1/2 quart sizes. When preparing recipes in a larger unit, such as a 5 to 7-quart slow cooker, here are guidelines for doubling or tripling ingredients:

* When preparing dishes with beef or pork in a larger unit, browning the meat in a skillet before adding to the slow cooker yields the best results; the meat will cook more evenly. Roasted meats, chicken, and turkey quantities may be doubled or tripled, and seasonings adjusted by half. Caution: Flavorful spices such as garlic and chili powder will intensify during long slow cooking. Add just 25 to 65 percent more spices as needed to balance the flavors.

* When preparing a soup or a stew, you may double all ingredients except liquids, seasonings, and dried herbs. Increase liquid volume by half, or as needed. The slow cooker lid collects steam, which condenses to keep foods moist and maintain liquid volume. Do not double thickeners, such as cornstarch, at the beginning. You may always add more thickener later if needed.

* When preparing baked goods or cheesecakes, it is best to simply prepare the original recipe as many times as needed to serve more people.

5 out of 5 stars I love this cooker   October 30, 2008
I just came upon this review while making a purchase for my parents - I have had this cooker for 5 years and LOVE it - my food comes out tender and flavorful - the settings allow you to cook on low for 8-10 hours or quicker - I always use the longer setting - I have never been disappointed - :)

5 out of 5 stars Best crock pot ever.   October 8, 2008
I have no idea why people are not enjoying this crock pot. I have had it for years, and it's always been great. I love that you can time it, then it auto switches to "warm" mode. I've also been using those crock pot liners so clean up is so easy now! Would highly recommend this product.
